PROJECT 01

Rayleigh, Essex

The Rayleigh Residence.

A Victorian restoration, reimagined for contemporary living.

00 / MASTER BEDROOM

THE BRIEF

To lovingly restore and reimagine a Victorian home as a richly layered family residence, retaining and reinstating the details that give the property its character while resolving how the rooms connect and function.

THE APPROACH

Dating to the late nineteenth century, this two-bedroom Victorian residence underwent an extensive restoration, balancing the preservation of its architectural character with the demands of contemporary living.

Original features were carefully retained, while missing details were researched and reinstated, including period-appropriate fireplaces, cornicing and picture rails.

The first-floor layout was reconfigured to provide independent access to the bathroom, with a new walk-in wardrobe making thoughtful use of the available space. Downstairs, an enlarged archway between the kitchen and dining room introduced a more natural connection between the rooms.

The colour palette responds to the changing light throughout the house: softer, muted tones bring warmth to darker spaces, while richer Victorian-inspired greens lend depth and character to rooms benefiting from generous original windows.

The result is a home that respects its past while embracing the way it is lived in today.

PROJECT 02

Casa del Mar.

Mediterranean living, quietly reimagined.

Estepona, Costa del Sol

01 / LIVING ROOM

THE BRIEF

To bring a renewed sense of warmth and character to a Mediterranean home, creating inviting, thoughtfully layered interiors through a balance of contemporary furnishings, natural textures and carefully selected decorative details.

THE APPROACH

The project began with a focus on the bedroom and living spaces, exploring how colour, texture and decorative detail could create a more cohesive and inviting atmosphere.

A restrained approach to furnishing and styling brings together tactile materials, considered lighting, mirrors and carefully chosen accessories, allowing each element to contribute to the character of the home.

With further phases planned, Casa del Mar continues to evolve through a series of thoughtful interventions.

PROJECT 03

Stock, Essex

Stock Country Residence.

An 1850s workers’ cottage, sympathetically and substantially extended.

01 / AFTER — LIVING ROOM

The extension and completion of a former workers’ cottage, thoughtfully connecting contemporary living with the heritage and character of the original home.

THE BRIEF

Originally built in the 1850s as a modest two-up, two-down workers' cottage in the Essex countryside, this home has evolved through a substantial extension that more than doubled its original footprint.

The addition introduced a generous new living room and principal bedroom suite, creating a new chapter for the property while retaining the character of the original cottage.

MacLeod Atelier was appointed during the early stages of the extension, with a brief to establish a cohesive design direction that would connect the new accommodation with the history and character of the existing home.

Working alongside the developing architectural scheme, the studio helped inform decisions around materials, finishes and interior detailing, ensuring the extension would feel like a natural evolution of the original cottage rather than a contrasting addition.

Planning restrictions influenced the architecture of the extension, particularly within the principal bedroom, where sloping ceilings and limited headroom required a thoughtful approach to furniture placement, integrated storage and lighting.

Drawing inspiration from the surrounding Essex countryside and woodland, the owners favoured earthy tones, sap greens and traditional panelling, complemented by subtle Art Deco influences to introduce depth, warmth and individuality.

THE SCOPE

INTERIOR DESIGN & DECORATION

  • Development of a cohesive interior scheme for the new living room and principal bedroom suite.
  • Establishing a visual connection between the contemporary extension and the original 1850s cottage.
  • Colour and material selection inspired by the surrounding countryside and woodland.
  • Incorporation of traditional wall panelling and architectural detailing.
  • Design integration of a reclaimed-brick fireplace using materials salvaged from the former outbuilding.
  • Furniture planning around restricted ceiling heights and sloping rooflines within the bedroom.
  • Consideration of practical clothing storage solutions within the principal suite.
  • Layered lighting schemes for the living room, bedroom and their connected spaces.
  • Introduction of Art Deco-inspired furnishings, lighting and decorative accents.
  • Creating continuity between both floors through complementary finishes, colours and detailing.

THE DESIGN RESPONSE

A dialogue between old and new.

The extension offered an opportunity to introduce generous additional living space, but its newly constructed interiors needed the warmth and architectural character of the original cottage.

Rather than treating the new rooms as a separate, contemporary interior, the design sought to establish a sense of continuity with the building's history, allowing old and new to sit comfortably alongside one another.

One of the earliest design decisions was to reclaim bricks from an outbuilding that had previously occupied the site of the extension. Rather than allowing these original materials to be lost during construction, MacLeod Atelier helped shape their reuse as a feature fireplace within the new living room.

The reclaimed brickwork introduces warmth, texture and a tangible connection to the property's past, while establishing a visual relationship with the wood-burning fireplace in the original cottage.

This approach informed the wider scheme, introducing character through authentic materials, traditional detailing and carefully balanced contemporary elements, allowing the extension to feel rooted in its setting.

10 / BEDROOM TOP OF STAIRS
11 / BEFORE — BEDROOM TOP OF STAIRS

With the living room and bedroom connected by an open U-shaped staircase, a consistent design language was essential to establish a natural sense of flow between the two levels.

The overarching ambition was to create interiors that balanced the authenticity of the original cottage with the comfort and character of contemporary country living.

The open staircase connecting the living room and bedroom made visual continuity especially important. Repeated tones, materials and detailing establish a relationship between the two spaces, allowing the design to unfold naturally as one moves through the extension.

The result is an interior that balances the familiarity of a traditional country home with the comfort and individuality of contemporary living.
